The provision of safe water, sanitation and waste and hygienic conditions is essential for preventing and for protecting human health during all infectious disease outbreaks, including of Coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid19). Ensuring evidence-based and consistently applied WASH and waste management practices in communities, homes, schools, marketplaces and healthcare facilities will help curb human-to-human transmission of pathogens including SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19 (WHO Global, 2020)
Goal Six of the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs) by the United Nations which is -to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all; has ambitious targets including but not limited to improving water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping and minimizing release of hazardous chemicals and materials, halving the proportion of untreated waste water and safe reuse globally by 2030. Ghana’s 1992 constitution states” the exercise and enjoyment of rights and freedoms is inseparable from the performance of duties and obligations.” One of the duties of a citizen under Article 41 of the constitution is “to protect and safeguard the environment.”
